Sage has the ability to see ghosts, which means that death of his abusive parent is not the end of his torment. The man works in a bookstore belonging to his late father and this is the place his father's ghost chooses to haunt. But that's just the beginning of Sage's problems. He was brought up with the belief that his magical abilities are minimal. However, when in the man's life a cute fox and the spirit of a gunslinger who claims that Sage has great magical potential appear, everything turns upside down. Moreover, it turns out that Sage's mother was murdered because she possessed the same gift her son is about to discover, which means he's in great danger.

"The Fantastic Fluke" by Sam Burns is a novel I simply had to read and not only because of the great cover that immediately intrigued me. Reading the description of this book, I knew I needed to get to know this story. However, it quickly turned out that "The Fantastic Fluke" also boasts an amazing universe that undoubtedly deserves to be the setting for many more novels. A very important feature of the world the author shows us is the fact that to some extent magic has its hierarchy created by people, had been checked and examined, is the integral and not hidden from the non-magical society part of the world. Although magic is not a secret and some time ago had been classified and divided into disciplines, it is still full of carefully hidden secrets that can cost some people their lives. Finally, it is worth mentioning that in the world of "The Fantastic Fluke" we meet familiars and ghosts, which are also an integral part of this universe. Sam Burns has created a really interesting, complex and truly magical world that is engaging and addictive.

The great advantage of the novel is also the brilliant plot, which is inextricably linked with the construction of the universe of this book. I really like the fact that the reader simultaneously gets to know this amazing world and becomes part of an unforgettable adventure. At the beginning we see the reality surrounding the main character through his eyes, he explains the principles of its functioning. Over time, however, Sage's knowledge is supplemented with new facts and thus we correct our own knowledge along with him. The author, however, made sure that the novel does not lack action, emotions, surprises, dangers, and romantic accents. Thanks to all this, even when at the beginning the action unfolds rather slowly, the reader is constantly interested in the events of this novel and eagerly devours every word, every chapter.

The characters are also a huge advantage of "The Fantastic Fluke" and I'm not talking only about our Sage, Fluke and Gideon, but also about other side characters. What characterizes the characters of this novel is undoubtedly their multidimensionality. Each of them can be described in many ways, depending on the angle from which we look at them, as each of them has something more to offer and was created with great care not only for the body, but also the soul. Therefore, the characters of this novel do not remain the same throughout the story, but they evolve, change. Moreover, as the story progresses and we get to know some characters better, the way we see them changes. Some surprise us positively, others negatively. We definitely have an impression that they live for real, feel and have many different layers that we are slowly discovering. The author really constructs them in an amazing way and builds them throughout her novel.

The topic that made the greatest impression on me in "The Fantastic Fluke" and which was undoubtedly the closest to me was the problem of not believing in oneself and the lack of self-confidence resulting from many years of oppression, humiliation and mental abuse. I really liked the way the author presents this problem, as it does not lack reality and believability. What's more, Sam Burns shows us this problem from the more obscure side, and thus more difficult to see from the outside and often ignored. I think that in this case it is also of great importance that even after the offender dies, they are still present to some extent in the victim's life, which in this story has been shown in a more paranormal way, through the presence of the ghost. However, while the aforementioned spirit also has another meaning for this story, the author did a great job in terms of showing us Sage's psyche.

To sum up, "The Fantastic Fluke" is a novel that is really worth reading, and once you get to know it, you are lost to the world, because you become addicted to the fascinating universe, colorful characters, intriguing plot. This is undoubtedly one of those books that we want to read as soon as possible, but we never want to finish for good.

Headcanon: Gideon often makes some funny mistakes that make Sage laugh so hard that he cries.

Fanfiction idea: Gideon and Sage on a date at an amusement park.

AU idea: Sage comes to a convention to meet his favorite author and get his autograph. In front of the entrance he runs into a stranger and loses his balance. Two people offer him help to stand up, the stranger (Gideon) and a small redhead (Fluke). It turns out that Fluke is the author Sage wanted so much to meet.
