Dear readers, once again I'm taking part in the Blog Tour hosted by Gay Book Promotions and as always, I'm extremely excited! This time the center of our interest is "Inheritance", 4th novel in "Deadly Curiosities" series, written by truly amazing Gail Z. Martin (aka Morgan Brice), who is one of the best urban fantasy writers I've read.
With her books (fantasy and urban fantasy ones), Gail Z. Martin changed my life on so many levels that I'll be forever grateful to her. And that's why I really wanted to know how urban fantasy changed her life.
Do you want to know as well? No problem! Here's a Guest Post the author wrote especially for you!

How Urban Fantasy Changed my Life
by Gail Z. Martin
I started out writing epic fantasy, big sword-and-sorcery adventures with individual books of a size that could be used for doorstops. I still love BFF (Big Fat Fantasy), and I’m currently writing in two epic fantasy series, but along the way, I took a detour into urban fantasy, and it’s been a fantastic addition to my writing life.
It started with Deadly Curiosities, my series set in Charleston, SC (Inheritance is part of this series). Charleston is a historic, beautiful city with a tragic past that is also one of the most haunted cities in the US. My main character, Cassidy Kincaide, can read the history and magic of objects by touching them, and she and her friends keep the world safe from supernatural threats. Writing the Deadly Curiosities series meant diving into Charleston’s history, urban legends, ghost stories and lore, which is so much fun.
Then came the Night Vigil series, with the first novel, Sons of Darkness, starring an ex-priest and a former FBI agent hunting demons in Pittsburgh. Once again, I got to immerse myself in Pittsburgh’s history and legends—even more fun because we lived there for a decade.
After that was Spells Salt and Steel (co-written with Larry N. Martin), with a snarky monster in the wilds of Pennsylvania. It’s set in the rural end of Northwestern PA where my husband and I are originally from, and it’s been interesting looking at that area through a different lens.
Urban Fantasy has a different tone and pace from epic fantasy, lets me experiment with writing from fewer (or in some cases, first-person) points of view, and gave me a chance to stretch myself with varied story structures.
Then I branched into urban fantasy MM paranormal romance, writing as Morgan Brice. While there were always relationships in my ‘Gail’ books, romance always played a very minor role, and there was no on-screen sex. The ‘Morgan’ books are solid urban fantasy, but also solid romance (about 50/50) with explicit on-page MM sex. That meant learning the conventions, plot structure and tropes of MM romance, and getting to know a whole new audience and set of authors.
So now there are three more urban fantasy (MM romance) series. Witchbane moves from city to city as Seth Tanner and Evan Malone hunt the dark warlocks who killed Seth’s brother. Badlands is set in Myrtle Beach, with psychic medium Simon Kincaide and homicide detective Vic D’Amato tracking supernatural killers. Treasure Trail, in Cape May, sees former art fraud investigator Erik Mitchell teaming up with ex-Newark cop turned private investigator Ben Nolan to deal with cursed hotels, mafia ghosts and haunted stolen objects.
Because of Urban Fantasy, I’ve added a whole bunch of new author and reader friends, and had a chance to tell a broader variety of stories. I’m thrilled at how many of my epic fantasy readers have followed on this journey, and I’m excited about the tales I have yet to tell!

Excerpt
“I have a problem antique I’d like you to take a look at.” The man on the other end of the call sounded rattled. I recognized his name—Alfred Stone, from Stone Auctions—but I didn’t think we had ever spoken, let alone met.
“What kind of ‘problem’ does it present?” I asked. A number of possibilities came to mind. “Questionable provenance? Not sure how to authenticate?”
“I think it’s trying to kill me.”
Well, damn. That kind of problem. “All right, Mr. Stone. Try to stay calm.”
“I just told you, it’s trying to kill me. I heard you…know…about these things. Please, help me.”
Across the store, Teag Logan glanced up to make sure everything was all right. I nodded, and he went back to helping a customer.
“I can come now. Are you at the showroom?”
“Yes. Thank you. And…please…hurry.”
I ended the call and sighed. This might be the first time Alfred Stone had an antique try to kill him, but that made it just another day here at Trifles and Folly.
I’m Cassidy Kincaide, and I own Trifles and Folly, an antique and curio shop in historic, haunted Charleston, South Carolina. The shop has been in my family for more than three hundred years. While we’re known as a great place to buy high-quality antiques, the shop is also a cover for the Alliance, a coalition of mortals and immortals who save Charleston—and the world—from supernatural threats. I’m a psychometric, which means I can read the history and magic of objects by touching them. Teag is my assistant store manager, best friend, and sometimes bodyguard—and he’s also a talented Weaver witch. Sorren, my business partner, is a nearly six-hundred-year-old vampire. Together with some other friends with very specialized abilities, we do our best to keep the world safe from dark magic and things that go bump in the night.
“Problem?” Teag asked when the customer left.
“I’m not sure,” I replied. “Alfred Stone just called—from the auction house. He says he’s got an item that’s trying to kill him.”
“You want me to go with you?” Teag pushed a lock of dark hair out of his eyes. His skater-boy haircut and skinny jeans made him look younger than his late twenties. “Maggie can handle the store.”
On cue, Maggie—our lifesaver of a part-time associate—waved to agree from the other side of the store. She was sporting a new bright pink streak in her short gray hair, and it matched her sweater, a reminder—as if I needed one—that she believed in taking risks and living large.
I reached up to slick my humidity-frizzy strawberry blond hair back into a ponytail and shook my head. “Let me go see what the problem is, and I’ll figure out what to do from there. It’s not far away, in case I need to give a shout.”
