The last year of high school Caleb was the happiest teenager in the world, all thanks to Nathan. Although the boys had to hide their relationship, as Nathan's homosexuality could ruin his sports career, Caleb didn't mind. Unexpectedly, however, everything ended and Caleb was left with his heart broken and anger growing and impossible to suppress.
Four years later, Caleb still feels the same pain and anger which stop him from living his life to the fullest. He and Nathan study at the same university, but they don't see each other at all, which works in Caleb's favor. However, a few months before graduation the boys are meeting at a party and the whole world is turning upside down, while old wounds are reopening. Nathan really wants to apologize to Caleb for what he did in high school. But the problem is that the boys still feel something for each other, and the more Nathan tries to apologize, the faster Caleb runs away from him.

"Bully & Exit" is the first volume in "The Midwest Series" by Brigham Vaughn. The thing that quickly caught my eye reading this novel is the fact that the author builds and tells us this story on two time levels. So, we see the events that take place "here and now" and those that took place in the past, which have significantly influenced the present and are the main axis of the plot. What's important, the characters start by giving the readers few information about what happened between them years ago and allow them to see how the past has shaped the present. Chapters concerning the past events appear gradually and reveal the secrets of the past step by step, so we don't know about the high school drama at once. I think that thanks to all this, we have the opportunity to get to know the characters, in particular Nathan, and fall in love with them before the whole truth about the breakup comes to light. It's a really fantastic way of telling this story, as it keeps us in suspense and gives the characters a chance to win the readers over.
To be honest, "Bully & Exit" is probably the first novel I've read in which I don't like one of the main characters, namely Nathan. I admit, from the very beginning I wasn't sure what to think about him, even though he really was cute sometimes. However, when I found out what he did to Caleb, it became clear that I just didn't like him. Sure, I did understand his situation, way of thinking, his young age. Still, he didn't win me over in this volume. Well, maybe a bit, but it wasn't enough. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with the novel as it is pretty good. It's more like my own issue. Just like in everyday life when we meet people we like and those we don't like, it all works the same way in case of the literary characters. This shows that Brigham Vaughn can create the characters that we look at as if they were real people and that is how I see Nathan. I don't like him, but Caleb feels something for him, so I just stick around to the end wishing them all the best.
I think the big advantage of "Bully & Exit" is the fact that the novel deals with the subject of prejudice and homophobia in sport. From time to time this topic is raised in the media which are calling for having an open mind and acceptance, but at the end of the day nothing changes. Most athletes still come out of the closet only after the end of their career, because they know that doing it earlier is tantamount to losing everything they have worked so hard for. All this is shown in "Bully & Exit". The author doesn't go into details, doesn't look for the source of the problem, but she emphasizes its existence, as well as shows, using Nathan as an example, how tiring it is to hide oneself and one's feelings, how much wrong the prejudice can cause. I am really glad that Brigham Vaughn raised this topic not only in this book, but in the whole series, which, to a certain degree, focuses on the subject of sexuality in sport.
In summary, "Bully & Exit" is an interesting, quite good novel, which, thanks to excellent way of dosing information, keeps the reader in suspense for a long time. The characters are fascinating and we don't have to love them to want to know their story and follow it to the end. What's more, "Bully & Exit" ignites our desire to reach for the next volume in the series, so believe me, after reading this book you will immediately want to put your hands on the second installment in "The Midwest Series".
Headcanon: Caleb often throws his dirty things around the room, which annoys Nathan.
Fanfiction idea: One day, Caleb and Nathan meet Nathan's high school teammates while on a date.
AU idea: Celebrities!AU, Nathan is a famous athlete and Caleb is an actor. They meet at a fundraising ball and are immediately interested in each other. Unfortunately, they both know that they have to hide their relationship if they will ever be together. When paparazzi manage to take some photos of them together, in the media all hell breaks loose.

Excerpt from Bully & Exit
Nathan’s voice was soft when he spoke, gentle like it’d always been. “Caleb Stockwell. I’ve been looking for you.”
Caleb cleared his throat and ignored him, tipping the bottle up for another long drink. He licked the spiciness from his lips as he debated making another run for it. There was a shrub blocking his way in one direction and a hockey player in the other. Even if he hadn’t been drinking, the odds weren’t in his favor. “Nathan Rhodes,” he managed.
“Damn I can’t believe it’s you!” Nathan leaned in and Caleb pulled back, uncomfortable with him being so close.
Caleb laughed bitterly. “It’s me. Now that you’ve satisfied your curiosity, you can run along.” He motioned with his hand, encouraging Nathan to leave.
“It’s really good to see you,” Nathan said, ignoring him. He took a seat on the pile of discarded construction materials, his knees brushing Caleb’s as he lowered himself down. Caleb pulled away as if scorched.
“Yeah? Too bad I can’t say the same,” he muttered, his head swimming as the alcohol began to hit him. He eyed Nathan’s long, long legs and the way he was pinned in by them, remembering the way they’d felt tangled with his as they came, panting shallowly against each other’s skin. It brought it all back; the scent of Nathan’s cologne, the taste of his skin, the way Caleb’s heart raced in his chest when Nathan held him close. It brought back the memories the ones he’d worked so hard to run from. The good and the bad. The sharp, intense happiness of falling for Nathan. The aching, crushing hurt that paralyzed Caleb for months after Nathan was no longer in his life. Everything he’d buried four years ago and vowed never to touch again.
He caught the first glimpse of doubt on Nathan’s face. “Are you okay, Caleb?”
“Oh, I’m mother fucking peachy,” he snarked and took another long drink. “I’ve made it through four fucking years trying to ignore the fact we’re on the same campus and with barely a month left in my senior year, I thought maybe I’d managed to pull it off. But nooo, Lowell had to drag me to this goddamn party, and of course you showed up too. Just my fucking luck.”
He raised the bottle again, but Nathan wrapped a hand around the neck and tugged. He was stronger than Caleb, so Caleb let go, afraid he’d end up getting pulled into Nathan’s lap if he didn’t. Nathan took a drink and passed the bottle back, licking the taste of rum off his lips before he spoke. “You’re so angry at me.”
“Ya think?” Caleb snarled. “Didn’t it ever occur to you I would be? What the hell makes you think you can waltz in here and pretend like all the shit that went down between us didn’t happen?” He tried to stand, but Nathan’s dark denim-clad knees were on either side of his, pinning him in place. He pried the bottle from Caleb’s suddenly limp fingers and set it aside.
“I don’t think that,” Nathan protested. “I was just glad to see you and I … I wanted a chance to apologize. I didn’t … I wanted …”
Caleb’s lips parted in surprise as cool fingers framed his face and for the first time in four long years, Nathan’s lips were pressed to his again. Involuntarily, Caleb closed his eyes, feeling a rush of heat wash over him, taking him right back to the first time. Before Nathan broke his heart.
